Baz Luhrmann’s “Romeo and Juliet”-The Director

This is one of my all-time favorite movies. Baz Luhrmann takes the classic Romeo and Juliet story and turns it into a modern, attention-grabbing work of art. This is the best adaptation of Romeo and Juliet out of all the plays/movies I’ve watched. Personally, I think what makes it so great is Luhrmann’s genius directing. The Auteur Theory definitely came into effect in this movie because of Luhrmann’s directing style and technique. The film is very fast-paced with lots of cuts and a wide range of shot sizes and angles. This is one of those films that make you pay attention. One 2 second glimpse away from the screen could cause you to miss something important, it moves just that fast. It is one of the few films that can take a classic story and put a twist on it that will not bore you. Luhrmann makes sure that the story is well-communicated in spite of the Shakespearean dialogue. I found it quite amazing that he could communicate and portray such a good story with that dialogue and fast-paced directing, but I guess that’s what makes Luhrmann such a great director. The music choice was perfect for the film; it was exciting and upbeat so it matched what was going on perfectly. The acting was also superb, which means there was good blocking by Luhrmann. Every aspect of this film came together to produce a great film inspired by the classic Shakespeare story.
